It is not a scam, but it is not as straightforward as the marketing suggests. Go in with eyes open.

For stores doing under $1M/year with small teams, Omnisend is arguably the best choice. For stores scaling past that, Klaviyo's deeper analytics and more reliable deliverability justify the premium.

The monetisation stack — ad network, Boosts, paid subscriptions with 0% take rate, referral program — is impressive. If making money from a newsletter is your primary goal, beehiiv is the obvious choice. But it is not an email marketing tool. The automation is basic, there is no tag or list management, no ecommerce features, and no independently verified deliverability data. If you need anything beyond 'write newsletter, send newsletter, monetise newsletter,' you will outgrow beehiiv quickly or need a second tool. It is excellent at what it does — just be honest about what it does not do.

The visual workflow builder and tag-based segmentation are actually excellent, and the 35-40% price advantage over Klaviyo is real. For a store doing $100K-$1M that primarily needs email automation, Drip delivers 80% of Klaviyo's value at 60% of the cost. But the lack of SMS, AI features, and 24/7 support are becoming harder to overlook. Unless Drip makes significant moves in 2026, Klaviyo will continue pulling ahead for serious ecommerce brands, and Omnisend will eat into Drip's budget-ecommerce position with better omnichannel capabilities at similar prices.

Mailchimp is an overpriced product trading on name recognition. The interface is really easy to use, the integrations are impressive, and the templates look great. But you are paying a premium for the brand while getting middling deliverability, gutted free plan, terrible support below $350/month, and the industry's most controversial billing practice (charging for unsubscribed contacts). MailerLite does the same job for half the price with better deliverability. The only reason to choose Mailchimp in 2026 is if you need a specific integration that only works with Mailchimp, or if the brand recognition truly matters for your business.

The veteran platform coasting on loyalty — after a brutal price hike

AWeber is a veteran platform with genuine strengths in customer support and simplicity — the phone support alone sets it apart. But the December 2024 price hike fundamentally changed the value equation. At $70-80/month for 10,000 contacts with mediocre deliverability (83.1% in independent testing) and basic automation, you are paying a premium for a brand name and phone support while getting less than what MailerLite offers at half the price with better deliverability. AWeber still makes sense for non-technical users who actually need phone support and don't want to learn a more complex tool. For everyone else, the competitors have moved ahead while AWeber hiked its prices.
